Zambia, Cameroun, Tunisia, Gabon in AFCON face off

By Sports Reporter

ZAMBIA has been drawn against four-time African Champions Cameroun in what looks to be a tough group for the Herve Renard side ahead of next years 27th edition of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) that kicks off on January 10 till 31 in Angola.

This is a repeat of the 2008 edition held in Ghana that saw Zambia pitted against the Camerounians in a match that many fans need no reminding of the result as the Chipolopolo boys went on to lose 5-1.

Others in the group are the 2004 champions Tunisia, who are no strangers to Zambia having walloped the then coached Kalusha Bwalya side 4-1 at 2006 edition in Egypt, and Gabon completes the grouping and will play in Lubango.

Hosts Angola are in Group A and will be based in Luanda alongside Malawi, the 1990 champions Algeria and Mali.

Didier Drogba leads his Ivory Coast side against Ghana, the four time winners and also another side that has qualified for the 2010 World Cup finals slated for South Africa in what promises to be an exciting group B together with Burkina Faso and the Emmanuel Adebayor’s Togolese side and will be based in Cabinda.

Defending champions Egypt are in Group C with two-time champions Nigeria, Mozambique and Benin and will play their matches in Benguela.
Angola will kick off the tournament with a match against Mali on January 10.

Zambia’s best record at the AFCON dates way back in 1974 when the team reached the final to force a replay with the then Zaire now DR Congo and again managed to reach the finals in 1994 but lost 2-1 to Nigeria and in 1996 the team could only manage a third place finish after beating Ghana 1-0.

Zambia finished third with five points in a group that also had winners Algeria, Egypt and Rwanda.

Group A: Angola, Mali, Algeria, Malawi.
Group B: Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Burkina Faso.
Group C: Egypt, Nigeria, Benin, Mozambique.
Group D: Cameroon, Tunisia, Zambia, Gabon.

WASHINGTON (AP) - It was a family affair for President Barack Obama at the Oregon State-George Washington University basketball game Saturday.

Brother-in-law Craig Robinson is the Oregon State coach. And the president brought along first lady Michelle Obama, daughters Malia and Sasha, and mother-in-law Marian Robinson.

The family sat courtside in the half-full Smith Center, munching on popcorn as Oregon State (2-3) handed George Washington its first loss after four victories.

After leading comfortably for much of the game, OSU survived a late rally by GWU to win 64-57 in front of a boisterous crowd.

Naturally, the Obamas were intensely interested in the outcome. Obama and Mrs. Robinson clapped when OSU scored. Mrs. Obama smiled and clapped, too.

Obama, an avid basketball fan who likes to play the game himself as often as he can, spent the past two days out of public view, enjoying Thanksgiving at the White House with family and friends. After the game, the president returned to the White House.

Zambia got off to a flying start in this year's Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup, defeating hosts Kenya 2-0 in the opening game on Saturday.

Two late goals secured victory for the Chipolopolo at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

The southern Africans dominated the game but had to wait until the 88th minute before China-based James Chamanga broke the deadlock.

Zambia, who are playing at guests in the tournament, doubled their lead two minutes later when Sunzu Stopilla took advantage of a lapse in concentration by the home side to force the ball home.

Kenyan coach Muhiddin Twahir pointed to a loss of concentration by his players as being a reason for the result.

"These are the mistakes that shall need to be corrected ahead of our remaining group matches," Muhiddin said.

"It was definitely a disappointing start but we have to get on top of things if we have to make an impression."

Despite his side's convincing display Zambia's French coach Herve Renard Coach insists they are not favourites for the title.

"It was good winning against Kenya but we must not lose focus ahead of the remaining matches against Ethiopia and Eritrea," Renard said.

The game was watched by Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga and former Zambian President Frederick Chiluba.

The tournament continues on Sunday with Rwanda playing Somalia in Nairobi while Burundi take on Zanzibar.

Defending champions Uganda will play Tanzania Mainland in the match to be staged at the Mumias Sugar Complex in western Kenya.
